Field-ready software for a world-leading wheat genetics programme.
How Avonet consolidated and modernised AGT's legacy research applications - resolving security vulnerabilities, improving field usability, and delivering a platform that researchers actually want to use.
Australian Grain Technologies (AGT) - one of Australia's foremost plant breeding and wheat genetics organisations - relied on a suite of legacy research tools that had grown outdated, insecure, and difficult to use at the point of data capture. Avonet applied a design-led modernisation approach to consolidate these applications into a single cohesive platform with full peripheral device support and a UI built around how researchers actually work.
What we were solving
AGT's Keep/Cull and Weight applications had been built on components that were no longer supported, creating a compounding set of problems: security exposure, performance degradation, and users who were actively working around the system rather than with it.
- Applications built on outdated, unsupported components with active IT security vulnerabilities
- Performance issues degrading day-to-day research data capture workflows
- User dissatisfaction leading to workarounds that introduced data integrity risk
- No compatibility with modern peripheral devices required for field-level data collection
What Avonet built
Avonet took a design-first approach - prototyping in Figma before writing a line of production code - to consolidate multiple legacy applications into one intuitive platform, then built out full peripheral device integration to meet field research requirements.
- Ground-up UI redesign using Figma and design thinking principles before development began
- Multiple legacy applications consolidated into a single, cohesive interface
- Centralised file management migrated to one accessible platform
- Integrated peripheral devices including printers and webcams for seamless field data capture
Results that speak for themselves.
The modernised platform addressed every identified security issue, delivered measurable workflow improvements, and produced a client satisfaction rating strong enough to generate referrals.
